Abstract

The article presents a study on the prevalence of accidental surgical trauma in horses and provides a clinical, biochemical, and planimetric substantiation of Iruvetol ointment efficacy in purulent wound treatment. The research was conducted in 2025–2026 at Vladus Riding Club (Mykhailivka, Poltava region) on two groups of horses with accidental infected wounds. Wound injuries were diagnosed in 24.1 % of the examined population. Trauma demonstrated a clear seasonal dependence: in geldings and foals, injuries occurred exclusively in spring (100.0 %), while in mares, 66.7 % of wounds were recorded in spring and 33.3 % in summer. Planimetric measurements proved that local application of Iruvetol ointment provides a pronounced anti-edematous effect, reducing the marginal edema zone area by 11.4 % on the second day and by 32.5 % on the third day relative to the baseline level, which significantly exceeded the edema reduction rate in the control group (26.3 %, p<0.01). Cleansing of the wound cavity from necrotic detritus in the experimental group was 13.3 % faster than in the control group. On the twenty-first day, the final wound area with Iruvetol was 2.8 times smaller than the baseline and 11.9 % smaller than in the control group. Biochemical serum analysis revealed that baseline activity of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphatase in sick animals exceeded the norm by 32.0 %, 38.4 %, and 22.8–50.4 %, respectively. On the fifth day, the experimental group showed a decrease in alanine aminotransferase activity by 27.0 %, aspartate aminotransferase by 10.9 %, and alkaline phosphatase by 17.3 %, whereas the control group demonstrated a 50.7 % increase in alanine aminotransferase, unchanged aspartate aminotransferase, and only an 8.2 % decrease in alkaline phosphatase (p<0.01 between groups). At the end of the experiment (fifteenth day), aspartate aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase activity with Iruvetol was lower than in the control by 14.0 % and 54.9 %, confirming the diagnostic and prognostic value of evaluating the enzymatic profile. The practical value of the work lies in a methodological substantiation of Iruvetol ointment local application to ensure successful treatment of accidental purulent wounds in horses.
